Steve has spent over twenty years in the cybersecurity field. His career spans the private sector, government service, media, and academia. Most recently, he was Global Chair of the data privacy and cybersecurity practice of the international law firm White & Case LLP. Before that, Steve served by Presidential appointment as a Commissioner on the nonpartisan Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, and was the first General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer for the cybersecurity technology firm CrowdStrike. Before that, he served for over 15 years with the FBI. As Deputy of the FBI’s Cyber Division, he helped oversee FBI investigative strategies, intelligence analysis, budget and policy development and execution, and major outreach efforts to protect the nation from cyber-attack, cyber-espionage, online child exploitation, and Internet fraud. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal. Steve has testified before the United States House and Senate on multiple occasions and, for over five years, wrote a monthly cybersecurity column in Security magazine. Steve also developed and taught a graduate-level course on cybersecurity law and policy at George Washington University and has been a guest lecturer for Brookings and Washington University in St. Louis’ Olin School of Business for over 10 years.
